A man was trampled to death at a Wal-Mart in Long Island
today. He was trampled by people who were so eager to get to $400 flat screen
televisions. I wonder which was more important to these shoppers; a life or a
T.V.? Several other store workers and shoppers were also hurt and sent to
hospitals, including a woman who was eight months pregnant.
I find behavior such as this to be appalling. Black Friday has become a
barbaric practice in this country. We are so defined by what we own that we
will hurt others to have more. We want it all and we want it now. God forbid we
have to wait and walk in the store in an orderly fashion. Personally I think
that if you try to break down the doors of a store, like this group of people
did (they took the term 'Doorbusters' seriously.) that you should not be
allowed in the store until every other shopper waiting in line has been let in.
It would teach people. I just can't fathom why people get so desperate for
possessions. I mean material thinks are great and all, but do we have to hurt
others to get to them? I love shopping, but I don't take it to the extreme.
Of course not all Black Friday shoppers are so rude and uncaring of the safely
and lives of others. I know and have seen plenty of shoppers who do not run and
fight for every deal offered in the store. I think that the people of America
need to calm down. Black Friday prices aren't even the beast prices. A person
is better of checking prices at various stores both before and after the
season. There is such a thing as an I.O.U. especially in these tough economic
times. I know that I am most likely going to get some of my Christmas presents
after Christmas. After Christmas sales can be awesome.
I will admit to doing some shopping today. I didn't push people out of my way
to get what I wanted. Mind you I wasn't looking to buy a T.V.I also didn't
leave my house at 3 o' clock in the morning, which did leave me to miss out on
a pretty good deal on a laptop for school. Mais, ces't la vie. I didn't argue
with anyone or get angry when told that it was sold out. There was no trampling
or shoving involved.
I do not understand why people get so worked up about owning things. This
country definitely needs to calm down and look at the little things that make
life pleasant. If they do they might find that a giant T.V. only gives them momentary
happiness. Reconnecting with a friend or sitting down and talking to their
families would make them much happier in the long run. Connecting with people
and having solid relationships with others is what makes life enjoyable.
We need to take a break. I urge you to stop and smell the metaphorical roses.
And please don't run
ANYONE over with a shopping cart.
